01. Two Routes — Choose Your Adventure
Route A: NH66 via Mahad — The Fastest
Mumbai → Panvel → Pen → Mangaon → Mahad → Poladpur → Dapoli
Route B: Tamhini Ghat — The Scenic One
Mumbai → Pune Expressway → Chandani Chowk → Tamhini Ghat → Mangaon → Dapoli
02. The Drive — Kilometre by Kilometre (Route A)
KM 0–40 | Mumbai → Panvel
For saving time from traffic, start early (6-7AM). Take the Sion-Panvel Highway or Palm Beach Road from Vashi. This is the urban stretch — you can expect traffic until you pass Panvel Toll. Keep your FASTag ready to save time. Once past Panvel, roads become open and real journey begin.
KM 40–75 | Panvel → Pen
NH66 is the best smooth and fast way to go through Raigad terrain. The view change from industrial zone to paddy field .this is first where you feel the Konkan vibe. Pen is the best sport to have a tea—there is a lot of tea stall and fuel station here.
KM 75–140 | Pen → Mangaon → Mahad
Heart of drive that road remain good. You will cross many small Konkan town, each have their own character. The Mangaon–Mahadroad run along the river valley and in monsoon it comes more beautiful. Stop at Mahad for lunch/breakfast – it's the last big town before the ghats.
KM 140–165 | Mahad → Poladpur (The Ghat Section)
The most interesting part of the drive. The road climbs through the Poladpur Ghat — hairpin bends, misty hills, and stunning valley views. During monsoon, waterfalls cascade alongside the road. Drive safely because in monsoon road become slippery. This 25km part make the whole road trip worth it.
KM 165–215 | Poladpur → Dapoli
The final descent into Dapoli. Where road become narrow but they are ell-paved. You'll pass through mango and cashew orchards, small villages with red laterite houses, and you will get the first glimpse of the coast. The view is almost like Konkan—green, quiet, and very beautiful. . Sea Princess Beach Resort is only 10km away from Dapoli town.
03. Best Pit Stops Along the Way
Pen — First Chai & Fuel Stop
Your first real break. Multiple fuel stations (IOC, BPCL, HP)there you will get clean toilet and tea stall. And you can also get vada pav from road side vendors. This is a 10-minute break before the next stretch if you start early.
Mahad — The Big Meal Stop
Mahad is the most important stop—it is the last proper town with ATM, restaurant, and fuel station before ghats. Have a full Maharashtrian thaliat one of the highway dhabas — dal, rice, bhakri, sabzi, pickle, and buttermilk. Fill your fuel tank here, no matter how much fuel left.
Poladpur Ghat — The Scenic Showstopper
For breathtaking views of the valley below, pull over at any of the viewpoints along the Ghat Road. During monsoon, water fall appear near road — Some close enough to touch from your car window. This is the road that make you take your camera out in every 2 minutes.
The First Glimpse of the Arabian Sea
After driving for 5 hours through village and hills, the road crests a final ridge and From there-- the Arabian Sea, shimmering on the horizon. This is the moment every Konkan road tripper lives for. Stop, take breath, photographs. And your beach resort is just 15 m minutes away from that place.
04. Best Food on the Mumbai–Dapoli Highway
- Pen (KM 75) — Vada pav and chai from roadside stalls. Quick and authentic.
- Mangaon (KM 110) — Try misal pav at the local eateries. Spicy, crunchy, and energising for the drive ahead.
- Mahad (KM 140) — Full Maharashtrian thali at highway dhabas. This is your main meal stop.
- Poladpur (KM 165) — Kanda bhaji (onion fritters) and chai at the ghat-top stalls. Perfect monsoon snack with misty valley views.
- Dapoli town (KM 205) — Fresh coconut water and local snacks. Last stop before the resort.
- Sea Princess Resort (KM 215) — Arrive to a welcome drink and authentic Malvani cuisine. You've earned that fish curry.

06. Route B Special: Tamhini Ghat Experience
If you take Route B (via Pune Expressway and Tamhini Ghat), then you will see a lot of beautiful view.-- especially during monsoon (June–September). The Tamhini Ghat is 30km road which go through deep forest with over 15 waterfalls, visible from road during peak monsoon.
- Tamhini Waterfalls — Multiple cascades alongside the road, some 100+ feet high
- Cloud cover — The road often passes through clouds at higher elevations
- Dense forest — The Western Ghats biodiversity is on full display
- Caution — Roads can be slippery, visibility drops in fog, drive slowly in 2nd gear
07. Monsoon Driving Tips (June–September)
- Drive in 2nd/3rd gear on ghat sections. Never brake hard on wet curves.
- Keep headlights on — even during the day. Fog and mist reduce visibility dramatically.
- Speed limit: 40 kmph on ghats. Seriously. The views deserve slow driving anyway.
- Watch for landslides — after heavy rain, small rockfalls are common. Follow the car ahead, don't overtake on blind curves.
- Pull over for heavy rain — if visibility drops below 50 metres, park safely and wait. Heavy showers rarely last more than 30 minutes.
- Download offline maps — mobile network is patchy in the ghats. Google Maps works offline if you download the region before leaving Mumbai.
